SMA Brazil made a strong impression at Intersolar South America 2025 with a renewed, more open and interactive booth, highlighting its leadership in system integration and the advancement of energy storage in the country. The company, a global reference in inverter solutions and grid management, used the event to demonstrate its readiness to support Brazil’s new phase in the energy transition.
During the visit, EnergyChannel interviewed Henrique Almeida, Sales Director of SMA Brazil, and also spoke with Peter Salles Geib, General Manager of Saft’s Energy Storage Solutions for Brazil and Latin America, who was visiting the booth as a strategic partner.
Storage: The Next Step in the Energy TransitionAccording to Almeida, the definitive arrival of storage in the Brazilian market is only a matter of time. Backed by SMA’s international expertise, the company is positioning itself as one of the leading providers of integrated solutions, ranging from hybrid projects to large-scale systems.
“We are entering the next phase of renewables. Storage will enable more flexibility, stability, and security for power grids. Our solution allows customers to choose their battery partners, always prioritizing quality and reliability,” Almeida emphasized.
Globally, SMA is already involved in ancillary services and grid stability projects, especially in Europe. In the UK, for example, the company participates in initiatives that provide inertia and short-circuit control—experiences expected to arrive soon in Brazil as well.
Saft: Global Expertise in High-Performance Batteries
Saft’s presence at the SMA booth highlighted the synergy between the two companies. Founded in France more than a century ago, Saft has become a global reference in advanced batteries, with a portfolio that includes applications ranging from World War II submarines to satellites and Mars rovers.
“If we can deliver reliable energy for space missions, it is only natural to also support the energy transition here on Earth. Together with SMA, we aim to bring solutions that combine reliability, efficiency, and sustainability to Latin America,” said Geib.
Today, Saft supplies batteries to aviation giants such as Boeing and Airbus and is rapidly expanding its footprint in the stationary energy sector.
Safety and Reliability as Key Differentiators
Both SMA and Saft stressed that quality must remain the top priority in storage projects.
“The Latin American market is facing dumping of low-quality equipment, particularly in Chile. But storage cannot be reduced to price competition. These are complex systems requiring safety, durability, and strict certifications. Choosing the right partner means avoiding risks, protecting investments, and ensuring true sustainability,” Geib warned.
Almeida also highlighted cybersecurity as a central pillar in SMA’s solutions. “Data is a strategic asset. We must ensure that energy infrastructure is protected against unauthorized access, safeguarding both users and nations,” he added.
Brazil’s Potential for Storage Projects
Agribusiness is emerging as one of the most promising sectors for adopting storage and hybrid generation solutions in Brazil, especially in regions requiring energy autonomy. For Almeida, this is a strategic segment that could accelerate the deployment of larger-scale systems in the country.
“When we talk about storage, we talk about profitability and energy awareness. Those who invest in quality secure guaranteed returns, avoid waste, and contribute to a sustainable value chain. But proper planning is essential—a poorly executed transition can lead to high costs and compromise already scarce resources,” said the SMA executive.
A Market in Evolution
Although regulation for storage systems in Brazil is still maturing, SMA and Saft believe the country has all the conditions to become a reference hub. Until the rules are consolidated, the goal is to share knowledge, develop pilot projects, and prepare customers and investors for this new market.
“We are bringing our global expertise to support Brazil in this process. When the market becomes fully regulated, we want our clients to be ready to operate with safety and efficiency,” Almeida concluded.
