Sunday, November 16, marked one of the most impactful cultural moments of COP30 with the panel “The Legacy of Lutzenberger” and the national premiere of the documentary Sociedade Regenerativa. The event took place at the BNDES House, located in the historic Complexo dos Mercedários — an 18th-century architectural landmark restored with support from BNDES and soon to be managed by the Federal University of Pará (UFPA).

Science, activism, and memory converge in a single stage
The panel brought together leading figures in Brazilian environmental thought. Dr. Irene Carniatto, a national reference in environmental education with 22 awards to her name, shared reflections before heading to Argentina, where she will be honored for her career.Climate journalist and strategist Sérgio Xavier, coordinator of the Brazilian Forum on Climate Change and special envoy of COP30, presented insights into the diplomatic and political dynamics behind this year’s conference.Environmental veteran Arnildo Schildt, with 24 COPs and more than a hundred environmental projects, emphasized the importance of grassroots engagement.Rounding out the discussion, Paulo Nobre, scientist at INPE and a global authority on climate change, offered scientific perspectives deeply inspired by Lutzenberger’s work.
A legacy that continues to shape Brazil’s environmental agenda
José Lutzenberger was celebrated as a foundational figure of Brazil’s environmental movement. His turning point came in 1971, when he resigned from his executive position at BASF in protest against the use of agrochemicals. From that moment on, he dedicated more than three decades to environmental advocacy until his passing in 2002.The panel also highlighted upcoming celebrations for the centenary of his birth in 2026.
Speakers recalled his significant role in preparing for the 1992 Earth Summit (RIO-92) while serving as Minister of the Environment under President Fernando Collor. Although he was dismissed shortly before the conference, his contributions were crucial to shaping the foundation that led to the creation of the UNFCCC, the United Nations structure that still governs COP negotiations today.
Lutzenberger’s unwavering defense of the Amazon, his ethical stance, philosophical depth, and close relationships with figures such as Chico Mendes, Ailton Krenak, and James Lovelock were central themes. He also introduced the Gaia Theory to Brazil, reinforcing the idea of Earth as a living, interconnected organism—a concept that guided much of his activism.
Documentary premiere highlights regenerative practices rooted in his legacy
Following the panel, the audience attended the premiere of Sociedade Regenerativa, directed by Pedro Zimmermann and produced by OKNA Produções.The film explores Rincão Gaia, a space created by Lutzenberger in southern Brazil where agroforestry, bioconstruction, and environmental education shape daily practice.Featuring voices such as Lara Lutzenberger, Rualdo Menegat, Mia Couto, and Ailton Krenak, the documentary offers a roadmap for more harmonious and regenerative coexistence between people and the planet.
A bold proposal in the heart of COP30
During the conversation, Paulo Nobre presented an idea that resonated strongly: renaming BNDES as the National Bank for Ecological, Economic, and Social Development, aligning its mission with 21st-century climate challenges. The suggestion was well received and is expected to be forwarded to the bank’s leadership as climate finance becomes increasingly central to COP30.
A day without negotiations, but rich in reflections
Meanwhile, the Blue Zone, where diplomatic negotiations take place, remained closed on Sunday to allow delegations to refine documents ahead of the final stretch of COP30. The Green Zone, dedicated to public programming, also paused activities—giving even more prominence to cultural and parallel events across Belém.
A tribute that reinforces an enduring vision
The tribute underscored how Lutzenberger’s ethical, scientific, and political legacy continues to inform contemporary climate debates. The proposal to rename BNDES reflects the lasting influence of his ideas. The event stood out as one of the most powerful and meaningful cultural highlights of COP30.
