Following its recent acquisition of RZK Energia, Pontal launches Thopen, a strategic move to expand its presence as an agent in the free energy market transition.
March 18, 2025 – Pontal Energy, one of the largest renewable energy generation and trading companies in the country, announces the launch of Thopen, a new energy platform designed to expand its presence and provide innovative solutions as an agent in the transition of the free energy market. Thopen emerges from RZK Energia, a company recently acquired by Pontal. The acquisition transaction exceeded R$1 billion, and now Pontal announces plans for a new investment in the platform, exceeding R$2.3 billion by 2027.

Pontal Energy is controlled by American private equity manager Denham Capital and is the majority shareholder of Thopen. NM Capital, controlled by Alexandre Grendene, and investment vehicles controlled by the Rezek family continue as partners in the company with the aim of generating value in conjunction with Pontal.
"The union of Pontal Energy and RZK Energia, now Thopen, reinforces our commitment to the energy transition, aligned with our shareholders' vision of investing in strategic and sustainable assets. We want to drive the future of the free energy market with an innovative, efficient approach and a robust portfolio," says Gustavo Ribeiro, CEO of Pontal Energy and Thopen.

Pontal Energy is one of the largest companies in the renewable energy sector, with a strong presence in wind and solar energy generation in Brazil, boasting a total installed capacity of 608 MW and a portfolio of greenfield projects totaling over 1 GW. In 2024, the company made investments of approximately R$400 million to strengthen its operations and expand its generation capacity.
RZK Energia, on the other hand, operates in the distributed renewable energy generation sector, with a total installed capacity of 163 MWp, spread across 45 active plants, including 39 solar and 6 biogas. Additionally, it currently manages 250,000 consumption units (UCs) and is building 40 new distributed generation plants, which will increase its total renewable energy generation capacity to 300 MWp.
Now, together with Pontal Energy, Thopen plans to expand by an additional 500 MWp in distributed generation by the end of 2027, totaling over 800 MWp, along with more than 1 million consumption units under management (UCs).
The executive team of Thopen includes, in addition to Gustavo Ribeiro as CEO, Luiz Serrano as Director of Strategy and M&A; João Pedro Neves as Chief Revenue Officer (CRO); Ricardo Valente as Public and Connection Sales Director; Carlos Delpupo as Construction Director; José Raimundo Silva as O&M Director; Roberto Barroso as Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and Pedro Machado as Chief Legal Officer (CLO).
The Largest Energy Platform in the Country
The Thopen brand emerged from the decision of its investors to simplify energy management, eliminating uncertainties and providing reliable information for end consumers to make informed and independent decisions. The platform will offer a complete journey for clients, supporting them from start to finish in the process of joining the free energy market environment. Additionally, this innovation will boost the Energy Advisors training program, which has already been in operation, making it more robust, competitive, and focused on entrepreneurship, based on credibility, quality, and knowledge.
"We are the largest complete energy platform in Brazil in terms of the number of consumption units. With the use of AI and human intelligence, we process over 250,000 accounts monthly. We are present in all Brazilian states, with a broad portfolio that covers everything from the free energy market (ACL) and Distributed Generation (GD) to auditing and tariff efficiency services that can cater to all consumers in Brazil," reinforces Ribeiro, CEO of Pontal Energy and Thopen.
The transition to the Free Energy Market is growing in Brazil. According to data from the Electric Energy Trading Chamber (CCEE), there was a 262% increase in the number of consumers opting for the free contracting environment (ACL) in 2024, year-on-year. "The opening of the electricity market in Brazil represents a significant opportunity for innovation and sustainable growth. With Thopen, we are creating a solid, efficient platform ready to meet consumer demands on this journey," concludes Ribeiro.
